Hearthside - The House That Love Built

Flag Retirement Ceremony & Open House Slated for June 13

To commemorate Flag Day, the Daughters of the American Revolution Beacon Pole Hill Chapter will be conducting a Flag Retirement Ceremony in conjunction with Hearthside's Open House on Saturday, June 13 th .

The ceremony will be held at Chase Farm Park at noon. Joining in will be Manville Boy Scout Troop 1 and the Girl Scouts. State Representative Mary Ann Shallcross Smith will give opening remarks. Proper handling and folding of the flag will be demonstrated, and a Revolutionary War Flag will be disassembled and burned in accordance with DAR ritual. Visitors are welcome to bring old flags for disposal.

Flag Day began in 1885 to celebrate the birth of the flag, which dates back to June 14, 1777. As President Wilson stated in a Flag Day message in 1917, “This flag, which we honor and under which we serve, is the emblem of our unity, our power, our thought and purpose as a nation.”

Following the ceremony, Hearthside will open its doors for house tours of the historic home between 1:00 and 4:00 p.m. Currently being exhibited are antique wedding dresses.

There is no admission charge for either event, however a $3 per person donation is suggested for the house tour to support restoration efforts.
